Spectra S1/S2 Tutorial
Let’s talk about breast pumps! Most new parents are incredibly intimidated by the big heavy box that shows up at their doorstep when they’re still pregnant. Unpacking and instructing on pump use is almost always one of the first things I do with a new client.
The Spectra S1/S2 pump is, by far, the most common pump in my area (greater Boston). Although it seems scary, you’ll be an expert in no time. My video tutorial will walk you through, step by step, how to use the settings on your Spectra pump.
Remember: Pumping should not hurt! If you’re having pain, struggling with milk supply, or need a plan for you and your baby, please reach out to me or another lactation professional.
Quick Reference:
Step 1: Push the power button.
Step 2: Immediately push the waves button to turn it to Cycle 70 (“Massage” mode).
Step 3: Remain on Cycle 70 until you see the milk start flowing, or for 2 minutes, whichever comes first. Turn the vacuum suction level as high as is comfortable. Higher vacuum does NOT necessarily mean more milk!
Step 4: Push the waves button again. In this mode, you can toggle between Cycle 38 and Cycle 54. Play around with what gets you the most milk, everyone is different.
Step 5: Once the milk stops flowing (anywhere from 7-15 minutes later), press the waves button again. Stay on Cycle 70 for 2 more minutes.
Step 6: One last time, push the waves button to go back to the Expression mode for a couple more minutes.
Try to limit the entire pumping session to approximately 20 minutes so you can have a LIFE!
You are entitled to a free Spectra through your insurance company, or you can purchase one here.
2023 Update:
I now counsel most of my parents to toggle back and forth between Cycle 70 for 2 minutes and Cycle 50(ish) for 3 minutes, then repeat 3-4 times. Based on many conversations with parents, this is what I’ve heard gets people the most milk. But - everyone’s body is different so play around to see what works best for you.
